  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To analyze surveillance data to determine whether populations
  10.        living along the Kenya/Uganda border have higher prevalence rates of
  11.        HIV/AIDS. METHOD: Analysis of surveillance data for antenatals in the
  12.        sentinel sites and reported AIDS cases between 1990 and 1993. RESULTS:
  13.        42,799 cases have been reported to the Programme by December 1993.
  14.        18,105 (42.2%) originated from the western part of Kenya bordering
  15.        Uganda. Cost province which is 800 km. from the western border on the
  16.        east reported 12,572 cases (29.3%) but only 4,673 (10.9%) are from the
  17.        coast province. The ANC sentinel surveillance indicates that the area
  18.        along the Kenya/Uganda border has HIV prevalence rate of 20-30%. Areas
  19.        along the highway from Uganda to the coast have a prevalence rate of
  20.        10-30%. Other areas away from the highway and far from the border have a
  21.        rate of 2-10%. CONCLUSION: Whereas studies have associated the high
  22.        prevalence rates along the Trans-Africa highway with the truck drivers,
  23.        more studies need to be targeted to the populations along the western
  24.        Kenya border to determine the factors that make these communities so
  25.        susceptible to HIV infection.
